Black Plus-Size Models on the Rise
1. Philomena Kwao
Watch out because Philomena just might be a household name pretty soon. She began her career after winning a competition in the UK. Since then, she has not only done a runway show for Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo, but she’s also become the face of the brand Torrid.
2. Victoria Lee
This Atlanta-based beauty is currently signed with Elite models. She’s done campaigns for Lane Bryant, one of the biggest brands for plus-size women worldwide. Victoria chooses not to let her curves get the best of her, and like many of the models on this list, she flaunts them to her advantage.
Another thing that Victoria is proud of is her beautiful brown complexion. In an interview with Essence magazine, Victoria says that she uses a variety of beauty products such as Lancome, MAC, and Too Faced to look flawless every day.
3. Tocarra Jones
You might recognize this black plus-size beauty from the third season of America’s Next Top Model wherein she finished in seventh place. Since then, Tocarra has had a lot of luck in the modeling industry. She has done a beautiful 14-page editorial for Vogue Italia as well as Rocawar’s 2007 I Will Not Lose campaign. Tocarra’s career has also extended toward hosting and acting. She’s had a stint in the movie Think Like a Man as well as competing in the VH1 series Celebrity Fit Club.
4. Sabina Karlsson
Part Gambian and Swedish, Sabrna owes it to her mixed genes for her exotic features. This six-foot tall biracial beauty caught the eye of 12 different designers during her first New York Fashion Show. Since then, she has done a number of enviable campaigns including that of the one and only Jean-Paul Gaultier. She is truly an inspiration for upcoming black plus-size models looking to make a mark in the industry.
5. Marquita Pring
Marquita has always made it her personal mission to be a good role model for young girls. She does so by making sure that she is always confident in her body no matter what. Marquita is one of the few black plus-size models who has worked with Jean Paul Gaultier and also got a full-page feature in Vogue Italia. She was recently featured in the Lane Bryant campaign, #ImNoAngel along with fellow plus-size model Ashley Graham.
