Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue made history after it featured plus size models in its 2015 issue. This annual magazine is widely recognized for featuring fashion models clad in swimwear against the backdrop of an exotic locale. Its 2015 issue, which was released earlier this year, made a breakthrough after featuring notable plus-size models in the industry.
The plus-size models featured during the magazine’s swimsuit campaign#CurvesinBikinis, were Ashley Graham and Robyn Lawley.
Graham was featured in the magazine’s newest campaign for the swimwear brand SwimsuitsforAll wearing a sexy black string bikini. A video was released together with the print campaign that featured the size 18 model, where she was seen capturing the interest of men by the pool. In the clip, she eventually flings her bikini top into the pool.
The aim of the issue was to celebrate the beginning of the ‘Curvy Girl Era’ and is aimed to empower women to feel confident while in their swimwear.
CEO and president of SwimsuitsforAll Moshe Laniado explained:
“Tastes and body types change over time and curves have never been more “in.” There is no better way to celebrate and show off than by donning a bikini.”
Graham, who is a positive body activist, shared in an article for The Edit stating:
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a size 2 or 22 as long as you’re taking care of your body, working out, and telling yourself, ‘I love you’ instead of taking in the negativity of beauty standards.”
