There has been an incredible change in the plus-size industry for women lately. It’s no longer rare to see a curvy woman walk the runway or grace the cover of upscale magazines like Vogue or Elle. There has also been an abundance of fashionable pieces for curvy women in store racks.
Unfortunately, the same progress is inevident in men’s plus-size fashion industry.
It is safe to say that plus-size men are nearly invisible when it comes to fashion. There wasn’t a single “big or tall” model on the runway during Fashion Week, and there are hardly ad campaigns featuring plus-size male models. That is a gap that fashion brand Destination XL is looking to fill in. Their newest campaign proves that not only do big and tall men enjoy looking as fashionable as everyone else, but they can also look good doing it.
DJ Khaled Stars in Newest Destination XL Campaign
Destination XL Group Inc. is the world’s largest retailer of men’s big and tall apparel. The company operates throughout the United States and London, with headquarters in Canton, Massachusetts. Their latest campaign called Time to XL features different models including celebrity DJ and media personality DJ Khaled.
Starring alongside Khaled is body-positive activist Kelvin Davis. In an e-mail statement to Mic, Davis had this to say about the exciting campaign:
“This campaign is different because it’s truly celebrating men that are XL in various body types. This campaign is uplifting and truly shines a positive light on being a bigger guy. Men of all sizes deserve to feel great about themselves and that’s what this campaign means to me. Doing this campaign felt different because it was an extension of the message I preach on my own social channels and platform. It truly meant a lot to be a part of it.”
Each of the photos has an added dramatic touch thanks to the black-and-white lighting and of course, the sleek clothes. Incorporating Khaled’s face has been proven to be a smart business move since the DJ has a massive following online. Other than Khaled and Davis, athletes David Ortiz and Hal Gill are also featured in Time to XL. The campaign photos have since been received warmly by social media.
“We want men of all sizes to feel empowered by looking good in what they wear,” the campaign taglines read. “Time to XL is a celebration of impressive XL individuals; they XL in different ways, but they do it in style.”
