More and more plus-size women are conquering the fashion and entertainment industries and sending the message that success is not about size, shape or weight, but about passion, determination, confidence and hard work. The most current plus-size personality, who is making waves wherever she go is Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson. She caught everyone’s attention and hearts, when she graced the cover of Entertainment Weekly’s May issue.
Fresh from her European press tour for the promotion of Pitch Perfect 2, Wilson was seen looking polish and chic in a sleeveless navy dress with pink and color blocking details. Her unique ensemble makes a bold statement that one does not have to be stick thin to look very chic and sexy. Wilson credits her more stylish look to celebrity stylist Elizabeth Stewart, who is known for styling Hollywood stars like Cate Blanchett.
The plus-size actress is one of the few Hollywood personalities who are quite active on the advocacy of being confident about one’s body, regardless of size. This Australian talent is bent on not giving into Hollywood pressure, along with fellow plus-size actress Melissa McCarthy. Wilson made headlines during the 2015 MTV Movie Awards by dressing like a Victoria’s Secret Angel with her famous bedazzled bra, skin tight leather leggings and wings to send an empowering message about positive body image to all women in the world. The word ‘Think’ was written across the backside of her leggings.
“I just like being who I am. No pressure could change that.”
This statement is backed by Wilson’s continuing success in one of the most competitive industries in the world. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she described her whole Pitch Perfect experience and how she was challenged by an enormous acrobatic act during the second movie.
“The first movie was so much fun because it was just like a musical theater camp, having fun. Whereas, the second one, I felt a lot of pressure to make a good movie for all the fans and all the people that loved the first one.”
She went on to recall about how difficult it was for her to do the acrobatic scene in the sequel:
“They tested me to see whether I had the ability to do it. I had to hang upside down for at least 30 seconds by my thighs. I was really, really scared. But Fat Amy is super confident. So I was like, ‘Here’s what I’m going to do: I’ll do it three times—that’s it. I won’t look scared in the takes and I’ll crush it.’ I was proud that I pulled it off, and it’s such a good opening.”
Known for her comedic chops, it comes as no surprise that Wilson started out as a stand-up comedian in the industry. Some of her famous sketches include appearing as Toula in the SBS comedy series Pizza and The Wedge. She then co-wrote and starred in the comedy musical Bogan Pride.
Wilson later garnered the Best Actress award during the Tropfest Awards for her role in Bargain. She also gained recognition after playing the role of Brynn in the film Bridesmaids.
Her appearances in the films like A few Best Men, What to Expect When You’re Expecting and Struck by Lightning earned a place on Variety’s list of Top Ten Comic to Watch for 2011. It was later followed by a series of roles in the movies, Bachelorette and the Pitch Perfect film series.
Despite her growing success, this down-to-earth actress admits that the experience is simply surreal.
“I was in Africa last year. The teenage girls would scream at me like I was in One Direction. It’s crazy that it’s reached these corners of the world. It’s really awesome.”
With that said, Wilson shows that she is one perfect example of size not being a hindrance when it comes to pursuing a respectable career in any industry you want to be in.
