Iskra Lawrence is the model of the moment. She is currently the face of American Eagle Outfitters lingerie line Aerie and holds a managing editor post in Runway Riot. On top of that, Iskra had recently made her runway debut at this year’s New York Fashion Week.
But despite her overwhelming success, life has not always been easy for the 26-year-old model from Worcestershire. Just like so many plus-size models in the industry, she needed to work hard to really be recognized.
Iskra Lawrence: Breakthrough Model of 2016
Long before Iskra Lawrence got mainstream attention, an agency dumped her at age 15 because they claimed that her hips were too big. Iskra is currently at a US size 10, which is considered to be the average size for American women. Apparently, this is what the fashion industry already considers as plus-size. But despite the labels and unending critics who voice their unwanted opinions, Iskra has still been raking in numerous projects under her belt.
As the cover model of the September issue of Arcadia magazine, Iskra highlights her enviable figure in curve-hugging outfits. On top of that, she was also featured alongside fashion blogger Gabi Gregg for Simply Be, a Manchester-based retail brand. The campaign was aptly titled as Step Out, and it aims to promote body positivity for women of all shapes and sizes. In an interview with the Daily Mail’s Femail column, Iskra had this to share about the experience:
The campaign is literally about stepping out and embracing who you are and feeling fantastic about how you look. The Simply Be AW16 fashion collection is great as it’s full of color, print, and all the key trends you want to wear for the season making no compromise on style.
Hopefully, it will inspire women to have the confidence to be real and embrace who they are. Fashion might seem like quite a trivial subject, but how you feel about how you look can effect so many more parts of your life, so it’s great to encourage women to be unapologetic and celebrate the way they look, even if that doesn’t conform to a prescribed look or size.
There are no rules—it’s about stepping out and feeling confident and fabulous.
Iskra Lawrence is also known for being vocal about beauty standards on her Instagram page. She makes sure that the photos she shares each day with her 2.5 million followers are not digitally altered.
Social media has enabled me to connect with people all over the world. It allows you to feature and post what you like, but I’ve learnt with that comes a responsibility as so many people have been kind enough to come back and tell me how inspiring they find my posts so it does make me aware of what I put up.
