Nowadays, the fashion industry is starting to become a bit more realistic, and apparently emphasizing on curvy women is the new trend. The plus size industry is designing and selling clothes to approximately 62% of American women, therefore this new wave of popularity regarding plus size modeling is understandable. The dawned chic-heroin fashion era (skinny skinny models) is overcome by the new, realistic approach of feminine appearance: most women are not perfectly slim, they have curves, and they have to be comfortable in their own skin.

If you decide you want to join the industry of plus-size modeling, brace yourself, because it won’t be easy. But if you have what it takes, you’ll definitely make it. Now, let’s define “having what it takes”; first, you need to be confident and comfortable in your own skin. If you show up at a casting all shy and with low self esteem, you won’t do yourself any good. With plus size modeling it’s all about natural beauty and acceptance. Women all over the world need to know that it’s okay to have a few extra pounds. Therefore, be beautiful and shine like you’re the only person in the room.

Plus size modeling has a similarity with mainstream modeling: it’s all about proportion. When showing up at a casting don’t try to overdo it, meaning: don’t use excessive make-up, don’t wear close that are too small for you, keep your hair simple. Also, be polite. You may hear comments on your appearance, but don’t let them get to you – just smile and say “thank you”, and if you don’t feel comfortable there, move along. Oh, and don’t forget about your portfolio. You don’t need to have it in full, but you may find it helpful to have several photographs and headshots on you when you’re going to an agency.

Don’t let yourself intimidated and keep trying until you make it. That is the key to succeeding in this industry.
